The day started out in a rough way for the Yankees, when they learned the news that Derek Jeter, still has soreness in his left ankle and that he will likely start the season, on the DL. With a return date set at April 6th.

Yet the day ended in a positive way, for two reasons. First, the Yankees came away victors today against Tampa, 7-6, in 10 innings. Second, the Yankees are also on the verge of acquiring Vernon Wells from the Angels.

Tampa struck early of starting pitcher, Adam Warren when Desmond Jennings tripled to center, off the first pitch of the game. He later came in to score.

Kevin Youkilis put the Yankees on the with the 1st of his two, 2-run homers in Todays game. A Jeremy Hellickson changeup, that landed over the left field wall. His second came in the 8th, a blast off the score board in left center, to give the Yankees a 6-5 lead.

Tampa was able to tie the game in the 9th off pitcher David Aardsma. Setting the stage in the 10th for Ronnier Mustelier, to just get enough of the ball, sending over the wall in left. Ballgame, Yankees win.

Other notables in the game include Travis Hafner, launching his 2nd HR of the spring, to right field in the 6th. Likely Opening Day shortstop Eduardo Nunez, had a good day at the plate, going 2-3 with a walk, and RBI triple in the 3rd inning.

Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless 6th inning, in his fifth appearance this spring. Allowing 2 hits, 1 BB, and 1 K.

Joba Chamberlin also put in a solid inning of relief. Hitting 97mph at times, with his fastball.

Up next for the Yankees: After an off-day on Monday, the Astros will come to town on Tuesday, for a game at 7:05 pm. CC Sabathia will take the mound for New York, in his last start, prior to Opening Day.

Spring Training is winding down, as we inch closer and closer to Opening Day. With that, the spring games become more important for players to get as ready as possible, for the long lasting campaign.

Last night, the Yankees hosted the Minnesota Twins, from GMS Field in Tampa.

David Phelps has been battling hard this spring for a spot in the rotation, and last night through the 1st three innings, put on a solid starting performance.

Phelps struckout 6 through three innings, but run into some trouble in the 4th inning, allowing 5 runs, including a 3-run double over the head of Ichiro in rightfield.

Coming into the game, Phelps had only allowed 5 runs in 19 innings this spring.

Robinson Cano rejoined the Yankees lineup last night. Picking up a 4th inning single, then coming around to score the teams only run. Cano finished the game 1-2.

Then in the 5th inning, Mariano Rivera came into the game for some late spring work. After allowing his 1st base hit of the spring, Rivera came back to strikeout the next three hitters. Throwing a total of 20 pitches.

David Robertson came into the ballgame an inning later, and fired a scoreless 1-2-3 inning.

Yet in the end, the Yankees, after one 5 run inning in the 4th, lost to the Minnesota Twins 5-1.

Next up for the Yankees here in Florida, is a trip down to Fort Myers to take on the Twins at 1:05. Ivan Nova will take the hill for the Bombers.

As it stands, its very unknown whether or now we're going to see someone for the Yankees not named Derek Jeter, start at shortstop on Opening Day, for the 1st time since 2001.

Jeter was scratched from yesterday's lineup due to stiffness in his left ankle. It also kept him from playing today. Now its being questioned if Jeter will even take the field on Opening Day.

Brian Cashman said today, that he's unsure is Jeter will start the season on the DL. "We can't rule that out." He said. "Until we see how the next 10 days go. I just can't rule that out."

With injuries to Grandy, Tex, and A-Rod, Yankees fans are going to have to just be patient with Jeter and let the situation play out. Don't panic just yet.
